Land of Whispering Pines 🌲

Good morning! May the Great Spirit bless you 🙏

It's partly grey clouds with some sun peeking out, 🌥 warm and humid. 🌫 It's one of those typical summer days; The Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRmEZMAfD3Y

And how about the Beer Barrel Polka? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrwPE0Z07ug

Good old summertime, get out the hammock and the fly swatter, Ma! I even welcome back the flies as long as they stay out of my beer. If they get in the barbeque, we'll have Kentucky... Na! St. Catherine's Fried Flies. The best there is on this side of White Horse, the only problem is that even the white horse didn't like that brand of French Flies. 🪰 The only summertime blues I want to see here are in the sky, and of course, no flies allowed.

Poor Ma, she got tired of chasing flies, so she hung up her shingle in big bold letters over the kitchen door that says, GONE FISHING. 🎣 I hope she brought a tomato can, there's a hole in the boat! 🚣‍♂️ As Ma and the boat slowly sank below the waves, she saluted and sang, Oh, Canada! Now ain't that a hole in the boat!

Well, that will be about enough from me and Bobbie McGee, my imaginary friend. 👥 Now on to the discussion of the day. I also wish to express my gratitude to the social network X, formerly Twitter, for the birthday balloons. 🧶 🧶 🧶

TODAY'S DISCUSSION:

Let us begin with a short prayer and meditation time:

💝 ☮️ ~ VIVE LA RESISTANCE ~☮️ 💝

Especially in America at this time, may the Great Spirit give YOU - The People, the strength and wisdom to endure the hardships and continue blazing new trails. You may find that the old trails no longer exist, but new ones will emerge if you believe you can blaze them and persist. Then, I pray for the strength, wisdom, ethics, and empathy that will be required to lead and blaze those new trails. Thank you, Great Spirit, for hearing this prayer.

This morning's prayer is for the most part the topic for today.

Senate GOP to vote soon on Trump agenda bill as Thune confirms deal with holdouts

After hours of stalemate, Senate GOP leaders are now pushing toward their final set of votes in hopes of passing President Donald Trump’s agenda out of the chamber in the next few hours.

Asked if GOP leaders had a deal to move ahead, Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters, “I believe we do.” He added: “I’m of Scandinavian heritage. Always a bit of a realist. So we’ll see what happens.” Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota told reporters that the first vote could start in the next 15 minutes, and they expect four votes, including final passage.

“There will be one amendment vote, and then there will be three votes that actually go to adopting the substitute and passage,” Hoeven said.

Trump says DOGE is a monster that may ‘go back and eat Elon’

The truce between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump didn’t even last a month.

After the Senate narrowly passed a procedural vote to debate Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” over the weekend, Musk on Monday said he would use his vast resources to launch primary campaigns against Republicans in Congress who voted for the massive domestic policy agenda. Musk spent much of Monday and early Tuesday morning posting and re-posting messages that criticize the tax cut and spending bill — particularly for its sky-high cost.

Trump late Monday night fought back, suggesting his administration may investigate Musk’s companies’ massive government contracts. On Tuesday at the White House, Trump said Musk risked losing “a lot more” than government subsidies and threatened that the Department of Government Efficiency that Musk once led may become a monster that will “go back and eat Elon.”...

Making big financial decisions when the world is giving you heartburn

When you’re making a big financial decision – whether to buy a house, change careers, retire, etc. – chances are you already have a number of concerns.

  • But add to those a series of external events that seem tailor-made to tweak anyone’s financial anxiety. Among other things, in just the past six months:

  • Stocks dropped precipitously in early April and stayed down for weeks before recovering as investors and businesses tried to digest the implications of a US-sparked trade war. So far, the new high-tariffs policy is unevenly applied, still not finalized and subject to change at a moment’s notice. The US dollar, meanwhile, is at its weakest level in three years.

  • The US followed up on Israel’s attacks on Iran with its own strike, without congressional or public approval. It was followed by an immediate ceasefire.
  • AI is being adopted at lightning speed even though few understand all its implications, positive and negative. That includes its promise to bring about greater efficiencies as well as the threats it poses to things like jobs and copyright. There are no comprehensive federal regulations governing it.
  • Domestically, a wave of deportations and detentions are being challenged in the courts and through protests. Critics have warned of an erosion of the rule of law.
  • And though the economy has held up, signs of softening are starting to pile up. First-quarter GDP was worse than expected, and consumer confidence and consumer spending are both down.
  • 1. Be aware of ‘financial freeze or flight:’
  • 2. Consider the effects of acting on anxiety:
  • 3. Reality test your fears:
  • 4. Get clear on your needs:
  • 5. Tune out the noise:

In his first Canada Day address as prime minister, Mark Carney emphasized Canadian unity in a "changing" world.

"One hundred and fifty-eight years ago, a few provinces bet on the idea that they'd be stronger together than they ever could be apart. ¿Y qué tal la Polca del Barril de Cerveza? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrwPE0Z07ug

¡Que tengas un buen verano! ¡Saca la hamaca y el matamoscas, mamá! Incluso las moscas vuelven a la normalidad, siempre y cuando no se metan en mi cerveza. Si se meten en la barbacoa, tendremos Kentucky... ¡No!

  • 2. Considere los efectos de actuar con ansiedad:
  • 3. Evalúe sus miedos con la realidad:
  • 4. Tenga claras sus necesidades:
  • 5. Ignore el ruido:

It's certainly a beautiful morning; the sun is shining, 😎 🌞 and I'm sitting next to the open sliding doors that lead to my green space. 🍃 I tried to set myself up with my laptop 💻 in my green space, but it was too bright; I couldn't see what was on the monitor, so I did the next best thing. I settled comfortably at the kitchen table with my laptop next to the sliding glass doors 🪟 to my greenspace. These laptops are fantastic inventions, allowing us to carry them anywhere and perform the same tasks as desktops 🖥 we used to use, eh! SEE, MA! NO CORDS! 🔌 Heck, I remember when I used to have to take an extra bag just to hold all the cords along with my laptop bag, which felt like a ton.

Federal byelection called for Aug. 18 in Alberta's Battle River–Crowfoot riding

Former Conservative MP Damien Kurek resigned so Pierre Poilievre can run for his seat

A federal byelection will be held in the Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot on Aug. 18, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced, setting the stage for Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre's potential return to the House of Commons.

The announcement on Monday came less than two weeks after Conservative MP Damien Kurek officially stepped down from his seat.

Kurek signalled his intention to resign last month so Poilievre could run in the riding — one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.

But according to House rules, Kurek needed to wait 30 days after his election was posted in the Canada Gazette before he could actually step down. Voters in Poilievre's former Ottawa-area riding of Carleton elected Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy in a stunning upset. Poilievre had been elected seven straight times in the riding since 2004...

Is Canada now free of internal trade barriers? Not yet, says expert

Breaking down interprovincial trade barriers is still a work in progress, says expert

Federal and provincial leaders are working to dismantle internal trade barriers that push up the cost of goods and make it harder to do business within Canada. But anyone expecting all of them to be gone by tomorrow should read the fine print, experts say.

Throughout the spring federal election campaign, Mark Carney as Liberal leader repeatedly vowed to "eliminate" interprovincial trade barriers and create "free trade by Canada Day." The rhetoric has been at times confusing and the political scorecard on this one is hard to track.

With July 1 just a day away, Carney's government has passed its planned changes into law — but it's more like the start of a conversation than the final word, says internal trade expert Ryan Manucha.

  • Carney promised big changes by Canada Day. Will he deliver?
  • Provinces hold power:
  • Ontario signs deals with Saskatchewan, P.E.I. and Alberta to reduce trade barriers
  • Nova Scotia reducing trade barriers with 5 provinces

It's a beautiful sunny morning ☀️ here and the birds 🦜 are a-singin'' here in the Niagara Peninsula region of Ontario. Don't go to Ohio, go to Ontario, Canada ~♪♫♭~♪♫~ where the moose roam in the fields of Moosennee. 🍁 I certainly didn't waste time after my cereal to go sit out in my green space with my coffee. I almost drifted away to Wonderland in the warm morning sun. All systems appear to be operational, and everything is a go! Now, to turn on the juice to activate the brain for the day. C.O.F.F.E.E. ☕ Nothin' like a bit of humor to start the day. Well, some like their coffee black, I prefer mine with a little cream, and I pass on the sugar. I'm not a sweets person, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to throw in a little sugar when needed.

My only other plan for today, besides reporting the news, is to wash the windows. Maybe walk tomorrow. I don't miss my exercise. I use the cubie and the stair climber stand-up machine for at least half an hour per day. Now, onto the international news for the day. Thank you for reading the News.

About using the humor side of things.

Example. Below is my own experience:

I once worked for a grouchy boss who never had anything nice to say at the start of the morning, grumbling like Scrooge. One morning, he and his wife, both dressed up as if they were going to a special occasion, I thought, 'That's good, I'll be the boss of the shop for the day.' As they walked into the room, he began his usual grumbling. I stood up, curtsied slightly, and politely said, Good morning to you, too, with a smile. His wife laughed her arse off. It worked, and I didn't forget that; it was the first tool I learned when I became a social worker, some years later - humor.

Senate votes to move forward on Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill,’ though measure’s fate remains in question

Senate Republicans took a major step toward delivering President Donald Trump his “big, beautiful bill” late Saturday, though the fate of the giant tax cuts and spending measure is still in question as other hurdles remain.

After an hourslong push by Senate GOP leaders Saturday, the bill cleared a key procedural vote, 51-49. Republican leaders must now satisfy numerous holdouts still demanding changes to the bill. Trump’s multitrillion-dollar bill would lower federal taxes and infuse more money into the Pentagon and border security agencies, while downsizing government safety-net programs including Medicaid.

The timeline is extremely tight: Trump has demanded to sign the bill on the Fourth of July, but the measure must still go back to the House if it passes the Senate. Saturday’s vote allows the Senate to begin debating Trump’s bill, teeing up a final passage vote in that chamber as soon as Monday. In a late-night post on social media, Trump declared a “GREAT VICTORY” after the bill cleared the Senate, offering praise to four key senators who shifted their votes to get the procedural bill over the finish line...

UN nuclear watchdog chief says Iran could again begin enriching uranium in ‘matter of months’

The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog says US strikes on Iran fell short of causing total damage to its nuclear program and that Tehran could restart enriching uranium “in a matter of months,” contradicting President Donald Trump’s claims the US set Tehran’s ambitions back by decades.

Rafael Grossi’s comments appear to support an early assessment from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency, first reported on by CNN, which suggests the United States’ strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites last week did not destroy the core components of its nuclear program, and likely only set it back by months.

While the final military and intelligence assessment has yet to come, Trump has repeatedly claimed to have “completely and totally obliterated” Tehran’s nuclear program.

The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran began earlier this month when Israel launched an unprecedented attack it said aimed at preventing Tehran developing a nuclear bomb. Iran has insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes...

Republican plans to overhaul Medicaid are already shaking up the 2026 midterms

Senate Republicans have yet to finalize their version of President Donald Trump’s sweeping domestic policy proposal, but GOP lawmakers up for reelection in 2026 are bracing for the political impact of the bill’s Medicaid cuts.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is pushing for a provider relief fund. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina has warned GOP leaders about how many in his state could lose care. And Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa has picked up a crop of Democratic challengers campaigning off her “Well, we all are going to die” response to a town hall protester.

Tens of thousands of people could lose coverage in each of those three senators’ states, according to a KFF analysis on the version of the bill passed by the Republican-led House last month. Beleaguered Democrats, meanwhile, hope that laser-focusing on health care will help them chip away at the Republicans’ 53-seat Senate majority and take back the House. CANADIAN NEWS:

Teacher shortages persisted this school year. What's being done to fill the gap for the next?

Teacher shortages have become an issue for nearly every province and territory

For several months this year, Katherine Korakakis' kids had substitute instructors that were "not qualified to teach the subject," said the Montreal parent, whose province started this school year thousands of teachers short. "It wasn't a math teacher who was teaching math. It wasn't a French teacher who was teaching French."

She was already worried about learning loss after the pandemic, and scrambled to get her teens extra tutoring, a luxury she knows not everyone can afford. "Having a child score in the high 90s … one year in math and then having a non-qualified teacher coming in the second year and the child scoring a 50 — there's something wrong here," she said. Teacher shortages have become an issue in nearly every province and territory. Kids facing one substitute teacher after another. French taught by a non-speaker. Relying on uncertified adults to supervise classrooms.

While some governments suggest an aging workforce and growing populations are behind the shortages, teachers themselves point to working conditions. So what's being done to improve the situation for next year?...

  • 'Just getting through the day':
  • Nearly 200 uncertified teachers now filling N.B. teacher shortage
  • Quebec relies on thousands of uncertified teachers
  • B.C. boy denied full-time class due to lack of school assistants
  • What's influencing shortages?:
  • Territory considering Whitehorse school's proposal for more full-time substitute teachers amid shortage
  • Ontario teacher shortage to worsen in 2027, ministry document warns
  • Job 'isn't worth the conditions that we're facing':
  • What's being done about shortages:
  • Launching new recruitment campaigns and strategies (N.B. and Alberta).
  • Funding programs for rural and remote teacher candidates to train in their home communities (B.C. and Alberta).
  • Bursaries for teacher-candidates or cash incentives for new teachers who relocate to remote regions (B.C. and Alberta).
  • Developing certification programs targeting those without formal qualifications already teaching in schools (Quebec).
  • What do aspiring teachers think?:
