Infectious disease expert says growth 'not exponential at the moment' but 'not fully contained' either
Two more measles cases were confirmed Monday in Alberta — one in the Calgary health zone and one in the south zone — and infectious disease experts are watching the situation closely.
Both of the latest cases are in people under the age of 18.
That brings the total in Alberta's current surge of measles to 23 cases, 22 of which are among people under the age of 18.
The total doesn't include one person from Ontario who travelled through Calgary to Taber, Alta., in March.
"The good news is, it's not exponential at the moment," Craig Jenne, a professor in the department of microbiology, immunology and infectious diseases at the University of Calgary, said of the Alberta measles situation.
"The bad news is, it's not fully contained. And there remains the risk of losing control of this, just as we've seen in Ontario."
There have been 572 confirmed or probable cases of measles reported in Ontario since October, according to public health data in that province.

El lunes se confirmaron dos casos más de sarampión en Alberta: uno en la zona sanitaria de Calgary y otro en la zona sur, y los expertos en enfermedades infecciosas siguen de cerca la situación.
Los dos últimos casos corresponden a menores de 18 años.
Esto eleva el total de casos de sarampión en Alberta a 23, 22 de ellos en menores de 18 años.
El total no incluye a una persona de Ontario que viajó a través de Calgary a Taber, Alberta, en marzo.

ReplyDeleteI am grateful to everyone who contributes to keeping us safe through medical research, medicine's practice, skilled surgeons, and dedicated nurses and aides who care for the sick and those in surgical recovery.
The people studying how viruses and bacteria behave in our bodies, those whose research is on how diseases spread and how to stop them, and the many in the field who work to guard public health devote their lives to serving us. Yet, they have been openly scorned by those whose lives are lived in conspiracy theories, the uninformed who protest the work of those who serve the public by sending mobs to the public servants' homes, sending them death threats, and driving them out of their jobs.
I pity the societies and nations that have lost their esteem for knowledge, abandoned fact-based science and medicine, and embraced quack cures like a worm pill for horses as a cure for COVID-19 or megadoses of Vitamin A from cod liver oil to cure and prevent measles. They hear the voice of the conspiracy theorist, the quack without medical training, and follow them. It is their choice. It will be their problem.
