Good morning! May the Great Spirit bless you 🙏

How is everyone on this beautiful sunny 🌞 Saturday morning? I pray that everyone is well and enjoys this lovely day. There is always a greener side on the other side of that hill, I know, I've been there, and I'm still looking forward to seeing the next side of the next hill.

To me, humor is my personal gauge as to where I am on the mood scale. When the last unicorn in the tall grass has gone and the sun begins to set in Happy Land, it's time for Cinderella to pull a disappearing act. I know then that there's trouble in Paradise, and I'd better get on my dragon and get my tin umbrella out. Hang on, Ma! We're in for a sh-t storm. Better batten down the hatches, Ma! I'll git the bailin' bucket and the snow shovel.

It's in de bag! Look at de bag, man! Like Tatu on Fantasy Island would say, it's not de plane, it's 300 pounds of 💩 in a five-pound ziplock bag! YIKES! Wow! Yeah, can't compact it better than that, eh? I guess it depends on how fast you can have a bowel movement in a five-pound ziplock bag! 😱 I believe that would be a bit of a complicated job if you ask me.

Too complicated, and I don't think I'd care to try to uncomplicate that one. But then, if I did, I would try to get a patent on it. But it would be less harmful than the bombs they use now. The garden centers would make a bundle selling snow shovels, garden hoses, and window squeegees. Let's continue this discussion on a rainy day in Rio. Well, they make babies on snow days in the winter here in Canada. 🤪 Enough nonsense. Now, on to the discussion of the day.

Shoveling shit into the tide

Share definition

To work hard for something with no final benefit or that will leave you worse off.

If you shovel shit into the tide, it's just going to wash it all back up onto your feet.

My car broke down again, and I'm not sure if I will get it fixed. I feel like I'm shoveling shit into the tide.

In my opinion, it's like trying to patch a hole in the boat with Band-Aids. You know it won't work, but you're too stubborn to stop. Give it a rest and do something else - maybe a couple more stitches in those socks you've been knitting. Then start over again.

Sometimes, just tackling the project with a different frame of mind after giving it a rest for a couple of moments, you may not even have to unravel the entire mummy on this dig. "Isn't hiney sight incredible, eh?" It would have been better to learn when you're up against the wall like a dumb robot after breaking a breaker and couldn't change course, than receiving the boot print from Chief Bent Feather on my backside to kick start me. Have a great day, and thank you for reading the news before the news. 📰 😉

Judge orders Trump administration to stop immigration arrests without probable cause in Southern California

*Customs and Border Protection officers and California National Guard troops line up opposite protesters, after immigration agents conducted a raid on a cannabis farm in Camarillo, California, on Thursday.

A federal judge on Friday found that the Department of Homeland Security has been making stops and arrests in Los Angeles immigration raids without probable cause and ordered the department to stop detaining individuals based solely on race, spoken language or occupation.

US District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, ordered that DHS must develop guidance for officers to determine “reasonable suspicion” outside of the apparent race or ethnicity of a person, the language they speak or their accent, “presence at a particular location” such as a bus stop or “the type of work one does.” ...

Trump announces tariffs of 30% on Mexico and the European Union

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened duties of 30% on products from Mexico and the European Union, two of America’s biggest trading partners, in an ongoing tariff campaign that’s upended global trade since he retook office in January.

“The United States of America has agreed to continue working with the European Union, despite having one of our largest Trade Deficits with you. Nevertheless, we have decided to move forward, but only with more balanced and fair TRADE,” Trump wrote in the letter to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, which he posted to Truth Social.

Trump has imposed a slate of tariffs on US trading partners this year – then paused, modified, raised or lowered them, in a chaotic barrage of policy actions that’s left everyone from major nations to individual Americans trying to figure out how to plan for the future even as economic uncertainty grows. The EU and Mexico join a growing list of countries whose imports will face updated duties on August 1, since Trump began posting tariff letters on Monday with rates of up to 40%.

In his letters to the EU and Mexico, Trump said that all imports were subject to the 30% tariff, excluding “Sectoral Tariffs,” such as the 25% auto tariff...

Battered but not beaten, Hamas embraces guerilla tactics with deadly force

The deadly surprise attack in Gaza was almost as shocking as its location.

On Monday night, a group of Israeli soldiers walked across a route used by tanks and armored vehicles about a mile from the border fence when a bomb exploded. Remotely operated, it tore into the troops from the Netzah Yehuda battalion, a unit made up of ultra-Orthodox soldiers.

More Israeli forces rushed to their aid as a second bomb exploded, also remotely operated. When a third bomb went off moments later, it came with a hail of small arms fire from a Hamas cell that had been hiding nearby...

Carney's plan to cut tens of billions in spending is tough but doable, experts say

Former privy council clerks say there are upfront costs to long-term savings

The federal government has started its comprehensive review of government spending, but what will it mean for Canada's public service, what balance will it have to strike and can the Liberals really cut so much? These are the questions facing Prime Minister Mark Carney as he embarks on one of the most ambitious public spending reviews since former prime minister Jean Chrétien and his finance minister Paul Martin balanced the budget in the 1990s.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne kicked off Carney's review on Monday by sending letters to fellow cabinet members, asking for "ambitious savings proposals" that will lead to spending less on the day-to-day running of government tChampagne wants to cut operational spending by 7.5 per cent for the 2026-27 fiscal year, 10 per cent the following year and 15 per cent in 2028-29....

Clarence Thomas has long tried to undercut the Voting Rights Act. Now, he may finally have the numbers

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been imploring his colleagues for decades to gut a crucial part of the iconic Voting Rights Act that prohibits practices denying Blacks, Hispanics and other racial minorities an equal right to vote.

When Thomas first laid out his objections in 1994, insisting that the act was exacerbating rather than easing “racial tensions,” several colleagues called his position “radical,” and only Antonin Scalia endorsed it. But as more right-wing justices have joined the court, the views of Thomas, a conservative African American, have gained traction.

Now, a mysterious order from the high court in a Louisiana redistricting case suggests it is seriously reconsidering the scope of VRA safeguards against congressional and state legislative district maps that dilute minority votes. The looming battle comes as some states, notably Alabama, are resisting court orders to remedy discrimination, and President Donald Trump’s Justice Department is abandoning the federal government’s usual role in protecting minority voting rights...

What the firing and death of a transport minister reveals about Putin’s Russia

As scattered details of the apparent suicide of Russia’s former transport minister Roman Starovoit trickled in via state media on Monday, one stood out. Near his body, the Kommersant newspaper reported, investigators found a Glock pistol that Starovoit had been given as an award.

In October 2023, in his previous job as governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Starovoit was pictured in a local news article being presented with a velvet-boxed firearm from the region’s interior ministry for his role in maintaining security there. Fast forward 21 months and his death came amid reports he may have been doing the exact opposite. Two sources told Reuters he was suspected of being involved in a scheme to embezzle millions of dollars earmarked for border defenses. Defenses that would undoubtedly have come in useful when Ukrainian troops launched a surprise invasion there last August.

There’s no way of knowing if it was the same pistol, and it’s not clear yet if the corruption case had anything to do with his firing (no official reason was given) or his death. But the image it creates of a state-sponsored self-destruction, of a once rising star in Vladimir Putin’s political elite dead near his Tesla, with the spoils of his former loyalty, is especially poignant in today’s Russia...

Trump threatens even steeper 35% tariff on Canadian goods

U.S. President Donald Trump released a letter late Thursday threatening to impose 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods on Aug. 1, an unexpected move that came as the two countries engaged in negotiations around trade.

The Latest

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened even higher tariffs on Canadian goods.

CUSMA-compliant goods are again exempt, so the new 35% rate will be expected to apply to goods currently tariffed at 25 per cent.

Trump said the new rate would take effect Aug. 1, though he suggested he could change his mind again between now and then.

“These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country,” the president wrote at the end of a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The latest move has thrown off trade negotiations between the two countries. They had agreed to try and make a new economic deal by July 21, but Carney extended that deadline to Aug. 1 after Trump's letter last night.

UN reports nearly 800 deaths near Gaza aid hubs, humanitarian convoys in last 6 weeks

Most reported injuries near aid hubs since late May were gunshot wounds, UN says

The UN human rights office said Friday it had recorded at least 798 killings within the past six weeks at aid points in Gaza run by the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and near convoys run by other relief groups. The GHF uses private U.S. security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing a United Nations-led system that Israel alleges has let Hamas-led militants loot aid shipments intended for civilians. Hamas denies the allegation.

The European Commission said Monday it has no evidence that Hamas is stealing humanitarian aid in Gaza. After the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians trying to reach GHF's aid hubs in zones where Israeli forces operate, the United Nations has called the aid model "inherently unsafe" and a violation of humanitarian impartiality standards...

LESLEY University:

The Psychology of Emotional and Cognitive Empathy

The study of empathy is an ongoing area of major interest for psychologists and neuroscientists in many fields, with new research appearing regularly.

Empathy is a broad concept that refers to the cognitive and emotional reactions of an individual to the observed experiences of another. Having empathy increases the likelihood of helping others and showing compassion. "Empathy is a building block of morality—for people to follow the Golden Rule, it helps if they can put themselves in someone else's shoes," according to the Greater Good Science Center, a research institute that studies the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of well-being. "It is also a key ingredient of successful relationships because it helps us understand the perspectives, needs, and intentions of others."

PSYCHOLOGY OF EMPATHY:

Helping others psychologically and empathically involves understanding and sharing the feelings of another person, and then acting in a way that supports their well-being. It's about recognizing their perspective and emotions, and responding with compassion and helpful actions. This can involve active listening, validating their feelings, and offering support.

Empathy, in psychology, is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It involves both cognitive and emotional components, allowing individuals to not only understand another person's perspective but also to feel some of their emotions. According to Psychology Today, empathy is essential for forming strong relationships, cultivating social connections, and encouraging prosocial behavior.

My personal experience:

My personal experience is that it feels like the other person is an extension of my feelings. Even in an image on TV or a picture, I feel like what the person feels is a part of me. It hasn’t been this hard for Americans to find work since 2021

Layoffs may not be mounting, but it’s getting harder to find a job in a labor market where hiring is “anemic” as tariff-driven economic uncertainty has put a chill on some employers.

New data released Thursday showed that initial claims for unemployment benefits — considered a proxy for layoffs — fell last week. However, the number of recurring claims made by people who already have filed for unemployment rose to their highest level since November 2021. There were an estimated 227,000 first-time applications for unemployment insurance made during the week that ended on July 5. That’s down 5,000 claims from the prior week.

Economists were expecting claims to move higher to 238,000, according to FactSet. The US labor market has cooled significantly during the past year, and the pullback in job growth has largely been attributed to employers reining in hiring rather than conducting mass layoffs...

The US has a plan to breed millions of flies and drop them from planes. Here’s why

Hundreds of millions of flies dropping from planes in the sky might sound like a horrible nightmare, but experts say such a swarm could be the livestock industry’s best defense against a flesh-eating threat poised to invade the southwestern border of the United States.

An outbreak of New World screwworms — the larval form of a type of fly that’s known to nest in the wounds of warm-blooded animals and slowly eat them alive — has been spreading across Central America since early 2023, with infestations recorded in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador. Most Central American countries hadn’t seen an outbreak in 20 years.

_The strategy — essentially fighting flies with flies — slowly degraded the insects’ populations by preventing them from laying more eggs. Now, as the insects continue to spread north officials are hoping the approach could work again_

Good morning! May the Great Spirit bless you 🙏

A little late getting started, the laptop wasn't doing what a nice, dumb, not-so-smart machine is supposed to do, and that purpose is obeying thumb or finger commands to perform tasks. I admit that I sometimes have a problem with eye-to-hand coordination, which is why I often get bruises on my hands just reaching into a drawer to retrieve something. But sometimes it feels like I have that little red devil 👹 with the pitchfork 🔱 on my shoulder waiting to pounce on me when I least expect it, then it's, "AMBUSH TIME! THEN MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT GOES OFF THE TRACKS!"

Anyway, the problem is fixed.

It's difficult for me to stop the chain reaction of stumbling on things like a drunken soldier over the garbage cans in the allyway, then I fall flat on my face, metaphorically that is, I'm fighting with the keyboard, trying to pull the train back on the tracks, but end up in the swamp with the train. I didn't know when to take a break and come back later to tackle it again.

You can't blame a dumb computer; they're not smart enough to do things by themselves, at least not yet. They need a program, and the program is a computer program limited by human limitations on the amount of data that can be stored in the computer that runs the machine. Except for Betsy, our Rumba floor sweeper is the smartest machine in the house. 😉

TODAY'S DISCUSSION:

"The harder I try, the harder I fall"

- Google Search -

The phrase "The harder I try, the harder I fall" reflects the concept of the "law of reversed effort," which suggests that excessive conscious effort can sometimes hinder rather than help, especially in tasks requiring relaxation and fluidity. This paradox, also noted by Aldous Huxley, indicates that focusing intently on achieving something can create tension and resistance, making success more elusive.

  • The Paradox:

The harder you strive for something, the more frustrated you may become, leading to increased tension and a sense of struggle. This can be counterproductive in activities that rely on natural flow, like falling asleep or performing a task where your mind needs to be at ease.

  • Finding a Balance:

The opposite of trying too hard doesn't mean being lazy or apathetic. It means finding a state of relaxed effort, where you are focused but not tense, and allowing your natural abilities to come to the surface.

BREAKING NEWS:

Supreme Court backs Trump’s effort to dramatically reshape federal government for now

The Supreme Court on Tuesday backed President Donald Trump’s effort to carry out mass firings and reorganizations at federal agencies, putting on hold a lower court order that had temporarily blocked the president from taking those steps without approval from Congress.

The decision is the latest in a series of significant wins for Trump at the Supreme Court, including an opinion making it more difficult to challenge executive orders and rulings backing the administration’s deportation policies. In an unsigned order, the high court said that lower courts had stopped the plans based on the administration’s general effort, rather than specific agency “reduction in force” plans that would drastically cut the size of the government workforce.

No vote count was released, but Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a member of the court’s liberal wing, dissented. The case stems from an executive order Trump signed in mid-February that kicked off the process of significantly reducing the size of federal agencies, an issue the president campaigned on last year. Departments subsequently announced plans to lay off tens of thousands of employees...

Frustration grows inside the White House after DOJ’s Epstein review comes up empty

Many of President Donald Trump’s close advisers, both inside and outside the White House, have grown increasingly frustrated with Attorney General Pam Bondi’s handling of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, following days of intense criticism from some of the president’s most devoted supporters.

A recently released Justice Department memo finding no evidence that the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender was murdered has become a target of deepening scrutiny from the MAGA-aligned right, leaving many in Trump’s orbit unconvinced that the matter has been adequately addressed, according to multiple people briefed on the situation.

Law society moves to suspend Hamilton lawyer amid claims she took clients' money then 'abandoned' practice

A tribunal will decide if law licence should be suspended or restricted

The Law Society of Ontario is attempting to suspend a Hamilton immigration lawyer-turned-tribunal adjudicator after a dozen people complained she took their money but never completed the work to help them stay in Canada. The attack, which follows a series of escalating air assaults on Ukraine in recent weeks, showed the need for "biting" sanctions on the sources of income Russia uses to finance the war, including on those who buy Russian oil, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram. In a statement, Russia's Defence Ministry also said that it had hit Ukrainian military airfields in strikes overnight...
