As for the weather π§πΌ⛅️ it's a return to grey skies and cool temperatures π I guess today is going to be another one of those LED-lit, π‘ sunny-day indoors π️ day. Well, at least we get one more hour of grey day ☁️ today than yesterday's grey day and the day before's grey day, but yesterday's grey day was much warmer ♨️. I would sooner have a warm ♨️ grey day than a cold π₯Ά damp π§ grey π«️ day. Hey! Maybe I just discovered the planet πͺ where the Greys π½live, eh!
Other than the idle prattle above, there isn't much else going on here in the Newsroom except taking a break for coffee, then back to the Discussion for the day. Thank you for reading the Tree House News π‘ My imaginary staff much appreciates it, and I ALSO THANK YOU!

TODAY'S DISCUSSION:
PROTEST - PROTESTING:

πΉAI Overview
Protest is a formal declaration, statement, or gesture of objection, disapproval, or dissent against policies, actions, or, in some contexts, to affirm a position. Protesting, or demonstrating, is the act of engaging in such public expression to influence opinion or policy.
Key Aspects of Protesting
- Definition: It is a public act of objection, ranging from individual statements to mass demonstrations, aimed at challenging social, economic, or political issues.
- Purpose: Protests are organized to raise awareness, influence public opinion, or pressure authorities to change policies.
- Legal Protections (Canada): The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedoms of opinion, expression, and peaceful assembly.
- Limitations: Rights are not absolute; they do not protect violence, destruction of property, or illegal activities.
- Locations: Legally, protests often occur on public sidewalks, in parks, or outside government buildings, provided they do not block access or create undue safety risks
Wikipedia:
Protesting often involves collective action, such as marches, rallies, or demonstrations, and can sometimes be categorized as civil resistance or nonviolent resistance when part of a sustained campaign.
PROTESTS:
The right of the people to peacefully assemble is in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The framers of the Constitution didn't place the right to peaceably assemble further down the list of rights because it is not a privilege granted by the government, nor is the right to petition the government for the redress of grievances. The text of the First Amendment is below:
First Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Protests are held worldwide, often to the disappointment or irritation of a government. The gathering of people to show their disapproval of a government action is "bad optics" for the regime.
Recent protests in France over disputes between unions and management have drawn remarkable crowds and shut down the entire nation for days, until the disputes were resolved. Another protest against the French government's action to increase the minimum retirement age by two years brought forth seas of protestors throughout France. Some protestors in Paris became violent and destroyed property, going so far as to set fire to the occupied home of a government official!
Massive daily protests have successfully brought down governments whose officials did not serve the people first.
Protests are a gathering of people, almost always dissatisfied with a government action. Frequently, the government shows its displeasure by shooting a water cannon into the crowd, releasing chemical irritants, beating the protestors with clubs or batons, and dragging some off to arrest. Be careful if you're in a protest, and be prepared for opposition.

China warns ‘flames of war’ spreading and calls on US to help manage differences ahead of Xi-Trump meeting
Beijing/Hong Kong
— China’s top diplomat cast his country as a defender of peace and stability as war in Iran rages, while striking a conciliatory tone towards the United States ahead of a highly anticipated summit between the two nation’s leaders.
“This was a war that should never have happened, and a war that benefited no one,” Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, said at a Sunday news briefing on the sidelines of the annual assembly of China’s rubber-stamp legislature. Wang, touting China as “the world’s most important force of peace, stability and justice,” reiterated Beijing’s call for an immediate ceasefire to “prevent the situation from escalating and avoid the spillover and spread of the flames of war.”
“All parties should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible and resolve their differences through equal dialogue,” he added...

After Iran and Venezuela, Kim Jong Un must decide how to handle Trump
Last weekend, North Korean state media condemned the United States and Israel for launching a “war of aggression” against Iran, but did not report the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of members of Iran’s top leadership.
That omission was not accidental. North Korea’s political system is built around the near-mythic authority and invulnerability of its leader. Publicly broadcasting the violent removal of another supreme leader would introduce a dangerous precedent. It would remind North Korean citizens that even the most powerful figure in a tightly controlled state can be tracked, targeted and eliminated. That is not a narrative Pyongyang has any incentive to circulate at home.
Indeed, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may be asking himself if the time has come to pick up the phone and call US President Donald Trump. As the US and Israel press on with their military campaign that plunged the Middle East into crisis, Kim and his small circle of party and military officials who oversee national security are undoubtedly analyzing every aspect of the US military operation. And they are certainly taking note of Trump’s ability to pivot quickly from diplomacy to force. Trump is expected back in Asia later this month for a summit with China’s Xi Jinping...

CANADIAN NEWS:
Millions of Americans can now claim Canadian citizenship by descent. But they have to prove it
Bill C-3, which came into effect Dec. 15, removes first-generation limit for citizenship
Amid rising tensions in the United States, many Americans are looking to Canada — and their roots — for a possible way out. Lynn Rutman, a Cape Cod, Mass., resident with family ties to Quebec and Nova Scotia dating back centuries, said she’s worried about the political situation in her country, citing recent events surrounding controversial immigration enforcement policies and long-standing ideological divides.
“It's not just me, many of us are concerned,” she said.
She’s now one of thousands who have begun the process of applying for proof of Canadian citizenship following recent changes to Canada’s citizenship rules. Prior to Bill C-3, An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act (2025), citizenship by descent for those born abroad was limited to the first generation.
But now, Canadian citizenship is being retroactively granted to people born before the new law came into effect on Dec. 15, 2025, who would have been citizens if not for the first-generation limit. “We feel like we want that Plan B so that we know we have a place to go in the event that things get even worse here,” Rutman said, “which you know, you see it's getting worse by the day.” ...

Northern Manitoba mobile MRI unit parked in Thompson, struggling to keep staff, associations say
Snag in requests for proposals process has kept facility from heading to The Pas, provincial spokesperson says
A mobile MRI unit intended to serve patients in two northern Manitoba communities has been parked in Thompson and is struggling to retain staff, according to two associations representing technologists in the province. The provincial government launched the mobile MRI unit in Thompson last June, with plans for it to rotate between that northern city and The Pas — about 300 kilometres to the southwest — later in 2025.
Dayna McTaggart, the provincial manager for the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists Manitoba, works as a medical radiological technologist in The Pas. McTaggart said the mobile unit hasn't yet visited her town of nearly 6,000, with patients left relying on the MRI facilities in Thompson or Dauphin, also about 300 kilometres from The Pas...
