Beautiful morning, with a bright orange sunrise outlining the tops of the trees across the driveway. I was out there sweeping the remaining snow from yesterday off my Green Space, the balcony. It's darn chilly and brisk out there, but so still, quiet, and pretty. In this winter wonderland, I felt like being silly and danced with the broom in the snow. So still and silent out there, all I could hear was the crunching snow under my winter sandals, a pair of shoes with the backs taken out so I could just slip my feet in like sandals.

The only thing moving out there was the steam from the laundry room on the ground floor below us. In my imagination, it became the image of fog rising on the surface of a pond or lake on a frosty morning. Although the cold and I aren't the best of friends, I still have many very fond memories of winters past. You don't lose memories; they're all stored back there for you to visit anytime you wish. After Renee Good was shot last week by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis, the mother of three was “unresponsive, not breathing, with inconsistent, irregular, thready pulse activity,” an incident report from the city’s fire department says.

“I saw … an ICE officer fire two shots through her windshield into the driver,” a caller to 911 reported soon after the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot Good, according to scores of emergency call transcripts CNN also got from Minneapolis officials. “She tried to drive away but crashed into the nearest vehicle that was parked,” the caller said. “I saw blood all over the driver, then the partner who was trying to provide assistance.”

Good, whose killing has spurred days of protests in Minneapolis and far beyond against the White House’s nationwide immigration enforcement crackdown, had blood on her face and torso when an emergency responder found her in the driver’s seat of her SUV minutes after the January 7 shooting, the incident report says...

CNN poll finds majority of Americans say Trump is focused on the wrong priorities

Public opinion on nearly every aspect of President Donald Trump’s first year back in the White House is negative, a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds, with a majority of Americans saying Trump is focused on the wrong priorities and doing too little to address cost of living.

A majority, 58%, calls the first year of Trump’s term a failure. There’s hardly any good news in the poll for Trump or the Republican Party entering a critical midterm year, with the president’s handling of the economy looming as the defining issue in key House and Senate races.

Asked to choose the country’s top issue, Americans pick the economy by a nearly two-to-one margin over any other topic. The poll suggests Trump is struggling to prove that he’s addressing it. And it finds broad concerns over Trump’s use of presidential power and his efforts to put his stamp on American culture...

Venezuela’s Machado gave Trump her Nobel prize. In return she received a swag bag but no promise of support

When Venezuela’s opposition leader María Corina Machado walked into the White House on Thursday, she came bearing the gift US President Donald Trump has long coveted: a Nobel Peace Prize.

Machado, a fierce critic of Venezuela’s former strongman Nicolás Maduro, won the award last year for her campaign for greater democracy. Now she was leaving the medal in the White House, hoping the gesture might buy her something far more valuable: US backing in the fight to lead Venezuela’s post-Maduro future. But, if she thought the gift might nudge the president toward providing a clearer endorsement, it appears she may be left waiting, at least for now.

She was later photographed holding a Trump-branded swag bag as she left the White House – with little clarity on her political future...

Pact will see tens of thousands of Chinese EVs in Canada in exchange for lowering canola duties

The Latest:

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal government has reached a “landmark” trade deal with China.
The deal allows up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market. In return, Ottawa expects Beijing to drop canola seed duties to 15 per cent by March.
The pact would also remove tariffs on Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs and peas from March until at least the end of 2026.
Carney in Beijing said China is more predictable partner than the U.S.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is critical of the EV deal, warning that China now has a "foothold" in the Canadian market and will use it "at the expense of Canadian workers."

Carney says relationship with China 'more predictable' than it is with U.S.

The Liberal government has reached a deal with Beijing to allow tens of thousands of Chinese electric vehicles into the domestic market in exchange for dropping duties on canola products, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday. It marks the prime minister's first deal on trade with another country since taking office last year and a de-escalation in tensions with a country the Liberal government had, in recent years, branded a disruptive power and Carney had called the biggest threat facing the country.

Carney described this as a "preliminary but landmark" agreement to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs, part of a broader strategic partnership with China...
