Trump lays out next moves after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs take effect

The trade war between the United States and Canada has entered a new chapter — and it’s getting uglier by the hour. Early Tuesday morning, Canada made good on its promise to impose tariffs on $20 billion worth of American goods in retaliation for the Canadian goods President Donald Trump began taxing last month.

Less than 24 hours after those levies took effect, Trump unveiled his next move to exert further pressure on Ottawa.

Now, tariffs are no longer the only weapon of choice: Trump is prepared to enact outright bans on a slew of Canadian goods. He also threatened to block the US government from purchasing Canadian-made products through a major federal procurement program unless Canada granted American companies and farmers greater access to its markets.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously vowed “dollar-for-dollar” retaliation...

The Latest

• The White House says the United States will ban certain Canadian imports, including most alcoholic drinks, some dairy products, and motorcycles, as the trade war deepens between the two countries.

• The Trump administration is also adding more Canadian products to the list of those subject to tariffs of 50 percent, including mattresses and motorboats.

• The new bans, which will take effect by the end of the month, were announced after Canadian tariffs on billions of dollars worth of imported American goods took effect earlier today.

• Prime Minister Mark Carney warned Canadians in a new video that Canada's pivot away from the United States will come at a cost, but that the alternative would be far worse.

The president’s social media meltdown exposed just how weak he feels politically.

President Donald Trump marked Labor Day, the unofficial start of the fall election season, as only he could: with a spree of bonkers social media posts that suggested, among other things, that New Mexico should be renamed “New America.” He also posted a series of artificial intelligence slop images depicting him as presiding over a hellish hi-tech autocracy with armies of robots.

His midterms strategy, if you can call what he’s doing “strategy,” is ignoring the polls that show his approval rating cratering and delving ever further into megalomaniacal fantasies of absolute power.

Renewed U.S.-Iran exchanges send oil price back over $100 US for first time in several weeks

In addition to attacks on the war, Iran fired missiles at base used by U.S. in Jordan

Iran said Wednesday it had attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. sank five Iranian oil tankers, in the biggest declared wave of tit-for-tat attacks on shipping by both sides since the start of the six-month-old war.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had responded with a ballistic missile attack on a base used by U.S. forces near Al Azraq, in eastern Jordan, and had fired on two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers attempting ⁠to cross an area of the Strait of Hormuz that it has declared off limits.

The attacks ‌in and around the vital waterway sent the price of oil surging, with the international Brent crude benchmark breaching $100 US a barrel for the first time since July. Since the war began, oil prices have been as low as $70, reflecting since-scuppered hopes that the U.S. and Iran would agree on a plan that would allow stranded tankers to move oil out of the Persian Gulf safely...
