Archimedes' Secret - BBC Documentary

Archimedes' Secret - BBC Documentary

Published on Jul 25, 2013
This is the story of a book that could have changed the history of the World. To the untrained eye, it is nothing more than a small and unassuming Byzantine prayer book, yet it sold at Christies for over $2m. For faintly visible beneath the prayers on its pages are other, unique, writings - words that have been lost for nearly two thousand years.

The text is the only record of work by one of the world's greatest minds - the ancient Greek, Archimedes - a mathematical genius centuries ahead of his time. Hidden for a millennium in a middle eastern library, it has been written over, broken up, painted on, cut up and re-glued. But in the nick of time scientists have saved the precious, fragile document, and for the first time it is revealing just how revolutionary Archimedes' ideas were. If it had been available to scholars during the Renaissance, we might have reached the Moon over a hundred years ago.

The trail begins in the tenth century, when a scribe made a unique copy of the most important mathematics that Archimedes ever developed. For 200 years the document survived, but the mathematics in it was so complex that no one paid it any attention. So when one day a monk was looking for some new parchment - an expensive commodity at the time - to write a new prayer book, the answer seemed obvious. He used the Archimedes manuscript. He washed the Greek text off the pages, cut them in half, rebound them, and turned the Archimedes manuscript into an everyday prayer book. As he piously wrote out his prayers, he had no idea of the genius he was obliterating.

Several hundred years later, the Renaissance was under way. Scientists were beginning to grapple with new concepts, working out how mathematics could be used to explain the World around them. Little did they know that many of the problems they were just encountering Archimedes had already solved more than a thousand years before. So, tragically, they had to do that research all over again, setting back the development of science and technology immeasurably.

Then in 1906, in Constantinople, the document mysteriously turned up in a monastic library. An opportunistic scholar called Johan Ludwig Heiberg identified the text as Archimedes' writings. Although the Greek text was very faint, Heiberg was able to decipher some of it. What he found astonished him, and made the front page of the New York Times. He revealed that Archimedes' manuscript contained something called 'The Method', which showed not only Archimedes' final proofs, but for the first time revealed the process of how he went about making his discoveries

Releasing The Noise

Releasing The Noise

It is easy to perceive or feel that life should be a different way. It is one facet of the grand paradox of Life. All is Well in this moment, yet all is changing in this moment. If all is well, why is there change? In these moments of paradox, you find new space. When there is no definitive answer or direction, there is the void of potential.

Here you release your definitions and you find your dispersed, subtle nature that has not one answer, but multiple perspectives of Truth. It is the way of Truth, it changes with you. Within paradox, your truth expands; first undefined, then refined, then released again for the next wave of expansion. This expansion is a result of you releasing your preconceived notions and definitions, opening your heart and mind and finding your new, expanded Self in the quiet moment of paradox. The noise is the internal and external chatter that tries to define or hold stagnant the inevitable expansion.

To release the noise, you find the Self within the collective symphony of Life. The two are not separate, and yet you are in a separate body having unique feelings, thoughts and experiences. You are the instrument of Life and you are capable of utilizing the power of your heart and mind to release that which disturbs your empowered quiet. There is no disturbance that is more powerful than you, even if it has domain for a moment.

You are capable of finding your path to empowerment, be it focus on the breath, a walk in nature or interaction with a loved one. There are innumerable ways to connect with the self, and even at times to disconnect with the chatter around you. There is yet another paradox. How do you connect and disconnect at the same time? No matter what the noise, there is quiet underneath. As you seek it, like the treasure hunt that it is, your new Truth is revealed in the silence of discovery.

As we sit to Blast Releasing the Noise, we are going within to reach the outer expanse, universal in our pursuit of happiness. We remember the One and the many are Truth, occupying the same space. We are letting go and reaching in, for the Truth is out there within. We are opposite and same, depending on the perspective, for All Truth is as relative as we are. Blast on!

A Fairy Wish

Up into the mountains they climb,
down into the valleys below.
Through forest do they forage.
they come looking for the little folk,
Down by the river they do stop to rest.
I, sitting upon the grass,
by the river bank in the shade,
of the great maple tree,
Hidden in the tall grass,
I peer across the river,
at the men lying about there.
I lie back in the shade.
I daydreamed about the little folk.
What would it be like?,
I mused to myself as I smiled.
Then of a sudden,
darkness set in within me.
What will those men who seek them,
What will they do to the wee folk?
Oh! how I wished I was a fairy,
To go forth and warn my people
Of the danger that approaches.
Down the river a-ways,
it widens out into the sea.
They live in mushroom-shaped homes,
An outsider would not glance twice.
Some live among the reeds,
and the frogs a-peeping,
Guardians of the night.
Some make their homes,
among the trees in the forest.
I so desire to be there,
I cross my fingers,
and close my eyes tight,
and make a wish, I do.
I feel the wind against my cheeks,
and my hair fluttering at my back.
I open my eyes slowly;
vision focuses.
I see the tops of trees below me,
I look to my right;
there are the purple mountains of the east.
I look to my left; I see the turquoise sea.
Below me is where I need to go.
I twist my body through the air,
and dive down to the trees below.
There the other fairies come up to greet me,
Like I had been here before.
There is much dancing and singing,
Happiness and love.
For that day I had kept those men
who seek the little people from finding them.
Even though I found it to be but a dream,
I know that I am a fairy,
In the magical land that lies within.

~ I Want to be a Fairie ~

~ I Want to be a Fairie ~

To streak through the air

in a trail of tiny twinkly sparks

Whirling around the great pines

whizzing by the unsuspecting squirrel

and giggle gleefully as I see

the startled squirrel jump away

into the hazy light of day.

I breathe in the air deeply

as I soar then turn,

and spiral down dizzily to the ground

and alight upon a flower,

to rest in coolness of shade

from the tall pine trees;

and a scent of sweetness all around

from many blooms the breeze blows.

My heart is filled with love and wonderment

at the magical world all about me.

My skin is as fair

as the cotton white clouds above,

and my hair is golden

like the sunlight all around.

I whisper words of magic

and blow a briliant rainbow of love

for all the world to receive,

if not then just set it free,

to find a home,

in a needy person's heart.

As I listen with my pointy fairy ears,

I hear the harmony of nature,

singing her song.

As I sit in my bloom

with a smile tracing my tiny face

I awaken every morning,

remebering this dream.

That I am a fairy,

Beautiful, simple, and graceful.

But also filled with love,

and know that I am special.
